Automatic extension of cover for international students
Due to Covid-19 and the “do not travel” advice issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, some international students are unable to leave New Zealand and their student visas have been automatically extended by the New Zealand Government.
It's a requirement of both the Education (Pastoral Care of International Students) Code of Practice 2016 (including Amendments 2019) and Immigration New Zealand that any international student who is enrolled to study in New Zealand for two weeks or more must hold appropriate medical insurance for the term of their enrolment and according to their student visa conditions.
The Studentsafe Inbound University policy contains an automatic extension of cover to the period of insurance, which may apply to international students whose ability to travel back to their country of origin has been affected by Covid-19 and related government border closures.
Details of the automatic extension of cover:
We will automatically extend the period of insurance for up to 90 days if your return to your country of origin is delayed due to a delay of transport or your inability to travel due to any sickness or injury for which a claim is payable under this policy.
Automatic Extension of Cover applies after the Student’s Cover End Date
The automatic extension of cover commences at midnight NZST on the day after the student’s cover end date.
Depending on the student’s circumstances, any one of several cover end dates may apply. To better understand how the cover end date applies, please refer to pages 7 and 8 of the policy wording under the header “Cover End Date”.

What you need to do
We ask that students who need to use the automatic extension of cover (due to Covid-19 and related government border closures and travel disruptions affecting their ability to travel back to their country of origin) to contact Allianz Partners, so that Allianz Partners can record this against their policy. No additional premium is payable for the automatic extension of cover.
Claims during the automatic extension of cover period
If a student needs to submit a claim for an event that occurs during the automatic extension of cover 90 day period, they will be required to submit documentation showing that their travel back to their country of origin was delayed due to Covid-19 and related government border closures. Claims can be submitted in the usual way. All claims will be assessed in line with the policy wording and policy terms, conditions, limits and exclusions will apply.
Post 90 day extension
For students who need coverage past the 90 day automatic extension of cover and still hold a student visa, they may contact the International Office to arrange for additional coverage to be purchased.
