Joanna Hikaka (Ngāruahine)

Joanna Hikaka says the SGS Research Showcase was a good opportunity to share her research, think about how to communicate to a wide audience, and discover the breadth of research going on at the University.

“I entered the Research Showcase because it was an opportunity to share my research. I try to take as many of these opportunities as I can, so that my research is being communicated more widely, rather than just sitting behind publications.

“I was really surprised and humbled to be named the winner of the poster category. My poster focused on part of my PhD research and explored the experiences of older Māori in relation to medicines and pharmacy services. In the poster, I presented the key messages that kaumātua talked about, which overall related to them having the ability, desire and right to control their medicines journey.

“I really enjoyed seeing all of the other people’s projects, and the breadth of research going on at the University – and all of the ways that different people present that research.

I’d encourage research students to enter the SGS Research Showcase this year. Not only is it a good place to share your work, but it will also to make you think about how to communicate to a wide audience.

I actually used the layout of my poster for dissemination to participants – it was a really useful template for communicating my research.”

Joanna Hikaka was the winner of the Academic Poster category in the SGS Research Showcase in 2020, with her submission: Kaumātua have the ability, desire and right to control their medicines journey. Joanna is also a recipient of the Fulbright Science and Innovation Graduate Award.
