"Entering the SGS Research Showcase was a spur-of-the-moment decision for me. I had just attended a faculty research showcase event and I was so drawn to the energy of the participants, as well as the enthusiasm and curiosity of the attendees. I remember sitting next to my supervisor in the last row and telling her, 'I want to do the SGS Research Showcase. I know we're a bit tight on time but I'm doing this!'

The best part of the event was definitely seeing students from every field get to come together and showcase their work to such a wide audience.

"I was so surprised when people from fields like psychology or physics or biomed were interested to know about my project on russet apples.

“It felt great to win the People’s Choice Award. Research, irrespective of what field you're undertaking it in, is for the people. I have always loved giving presentations and flash talks. I like to have fun with it. So, to even have an opportunity to present my research means a lot in itself. And then to have such a diverse audience appreciate it was really cool.

“I think it's essential for aspiring researchers to know the importance of communication in research – and the SGS Research Showcase provides you with the perfect opportunity to do so. It’s fun, it’s challenging and it’s an opportunity to showcase all the work you have put into putting out new knowledge into the world.”

Sravya Garimella was the People's Choice winner of the Academic Poster category in the SGS Research Showcase in 2020, with her submission: Russet Apples: Look Beyond Looks.
