Insurance process for students offshore

Find out how insurance is charged for international students who are studying offshore due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Students enrolled in semester or quarter courses

Having an approved insurance policy is compulsory for all enrolled international students. As a condition of your enrolment you are automatically registered and charged an insurance fee under the University’s insurance plan, Studentsafe Inbound University. You are required to pay the insurance fee together with your tuition fees by the start of the relevant enrolment period.

We understand that students studying offshore will wonder why they have to pay an insurance fee when they are not in New Zealand. This is because we don’t want to risk students travelling without insurance cover, if travel restrictions were lifted during the semester.

However, towards the end of semester/quarter, if you are still studying offshore, we will contact you with information about submitting an insurance waiver request. If an insurance waiver is approved the fee will be refunded and applied as a credit to your student account.

International PhD candidates

Having an approved insurance policy is compulsory. As a condition of your enrolment you are automatically registered under the University’s default insurance plan called Studentsafe Inbound University when you enrol in your PhD programme and every time you re-enrol in subsequent years. Please familiarise yourself with this policy.

When you arrive in New Zealand you need to make contact with a Postgraduate Adviser in the School of Graduate Studies. They will then notify the International Office to adjust your insurance fee accordingly to reflect the period you were not located in NZ (and did not require cover). This will show as a credit in Student Services Online (SSO).
