Guidelines for University support for trans and gender-diverse students’ legal name change

LGBTQITakatapui+ staff and students are an equity group within the University of Auckland's Equity Policy. Trans and gender-diverse students’ experiences and University of Auckland research have identified that use of preferred rather than legal names is key to the provision of a safe and inclusive environment for trans and gender-diverse students.

The University of Auckland will cover the cost of a legal name change for trans and gender-diverse students who meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Enrolled at the University of Auckland from November 2014.
  • A citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand.
  • Access to a New Zealand bank account for funds to be transferred into.

How to request financial support for a name change

You can request financial support for a legal name change by emailing legalnamechange@auckland.ac.nz.

The Campus Care | Te Papa Manaaki Team look after this email and support the funding process. The team consists of four friendly Case Managers; Avi, Chanel, Jemma and Naleesha. You will be identified a single case worker who will provide you with confidential support throughout the process.

Within your email, please provide the following:

  • your Student ID number.
  • a screenshot of the bank account you would like funds transferred into.
  • details of the name change documents you need financial support with.

You can expect to receive a response from a Case Manager within a few days (during University opening times).

Your Case Manager will set up a meeting with you (either by Zoom, or in person) to discuss your requirements in more detail. You are welcome to bring a support person with you to the meeting if you wish to do so.

The information you supply is protected by the Privacy Act, which places strict requirements on the use and disclosure of personal information.

What happens next?

Once your application has been submitted by your Case Manager and approved by our Finance Team, the University of Auckland will transfer funds into your bank account. You can then use the money to pay for the required name change documents.

You will need to provide your Campus Care Case Manager with the relevant receipts within two months of obtaining the funding.
