Guide for overseas students

Find information on studying with the University of Auckland from overseas.

Can I study with the University of Auckland from outside New Zealand?

Yes, you can study with us online if you are currently outside New Zealand. You can accept your offer of place and still begin your programme at the start of semester.

You should expect to start your studies online and transition to studying on campus in Auckland once you are able to enter New Zealand.

We are here to support you through this uncertain time. You can find up-to-date information at the New Zealand government's Covid-19 website.

New Zealand border policy

Right now, New Zealand’s borders are closed to most international students. You are unlikely to be able to enter New Zealand for the start of Semester Two 2021 if you are currently overseas.

We are working with the New Zealand government to find a way for students to travel here safely and expect there will be gradual and careful opening of the border through 2021. Immigration New Zealand is only processing visa applications for students already in country and those invited to return.

The New Zealand government is prioritising the return of New Zealand citizens, permanent residents, and existing temporary residents (including student visa holders) before new arrivals at this time.

We anticipate that currently enrolled students will have priority over new students when it comes time to enter New Zealand.

You don’t need a visa while studying overseas. We will contact you when it is time to apply for your visa. Then you can start planning for your travel to join us in person.

For more information, visit the Immigration New Zealand website.

Studying online

While overseas, you can study with us part-time or full-time online. You can find a comprehensive list of what courses are NOT available for online study at Studying online.

If your course choices are not offered online, or if you prefer to wait to start your studies in New Zealand, you may be able to defer to the next semester start date. There is no guarantee the New Zealand border will be open to international students at the later date.
