Research student COVID-19 fee waiver

We are delighted to announce that the University has approved a fee waiver for students enrolled in research courses whose progress has been affected by the COVID-19 situation.

Update: 30 April 2020

Fees free extensions for students in research courses < 90 Points

A two-month fees-free extension had previously been made available for students enrolled in research courses ≥ 90 points who can demonstrate that their research has been disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

After discussions and feedback from students and the teaching community we are pleased to be able to confirm the following additional offers in support of our students:

  1. A fees free extension of one month for students enrolled in a research component of more than 40 points (but less than 90 points) who can demonstrate that their research has been impacted by the COVID-19 epidemic
  2. A fees free extension of 2 weeks for students enrolled in a research component of 30 or 40 points who can demonstrate that their research has been impacted by the COVID-19 epidemic.

These provisions will help to mitigate the effect of COVID-19 measures on students' capacity to complete research projects successfully and advance to further postgraduate studies. Existing extension provisions will continue to be available to those students who are eligible for them.

Eligibility

If you are a student enrolled in a research course, are affected by COVID-19 and were enrolled on 1 March 2020, then you are eligible to apply. That includes both domestic and international students.

Process

You can apply to your faculty student centre for an extension. This will apply at the end of your current enrolment. The duration of the fees free extension will vary depending on the research course you are enrolled in.

  • Fees free extension of two-months for students enrolled in research courses ≥ 90 points who can demonstrate that their research has been disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Fees free extension of one month for students enrolled in a research component of more than 40 points (but less than 90 points) who can demonstrate that their research has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic
  • Fees free extension of 2 weeks for students enrolled in a research component of 30 or 40 points who can demonstrate that their research has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

When you apply, your faculty will ask you to show how your progress was affected, so now is a great time to start saving those email conversations with your supervisors about the ways in which COVID-19 has disrupted your work.

What can I do now?

We encourage you, wherever possible, to keep working on your research or writing to the best of your ability. Speak to your supervisor about what you can do and give it your best shot - but know that if you get to the end of your enrolment period and still need extra time, we’ll pick up your fees tab to enable you to get your work done.

Remember, you’ll need to show how you’ve been affected. Start saving any relevant emails now - and be sure to keep them backed up for when the time comes for you to apply.
