Postgraduate research student 2022 fees-free extension

Wednesday 30 March 2022

We are pleased to advise that the University has approved a fees-free extension of two months for students enrolled in a sub-doctoral postgraduate research component who meet the following criteria:

  • Enrolled in a research component of 60 points or more, with their enrolment commencing in Semester One 2022 or earlier
  • Have an original submission date (prior to any extension) between 1 October 2022 and 28 February 2023
  • Have not received a prior fees-free extension for the same research component
  • Be able to demonstrate that their research has been impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic

Students who don’t meet the criteria outlined above would not normally be eligible for a fees-free extension. Exceptions may be made in exceptional circumstances.

The extensions are available to both domestic and international students, but international students based in New Zealand will need to consider the impact of any extension on their student visa before they apply. If the extension enrolment will extend beyond the end date of their student visa, then they will need to apply for a new student visa.

We hope that these provisions will help to mitigate the impact of Covid-19 on students’ ability to complete their research project successfully. Existing extension provisions will also continue to be available if needed.

Students can apply for the extension by completing a AS-503 Application for Senate Approval of Extension of Time.

Applications should include a supporting letter from their supervisor, a timeline for completion, and a statement outlining how their ability to complete their research on time was impacted by Covid-19.
