Postgraduate research student 2021 fees-free extension

Wednesday 15 September 2021

Additional period of fees free extensions for postgraduate research students:

UPDATE: Thursday 14 October 2021

An additional 1-month fees free extension for postgraduate students enrolled in 30-60 point research projects will be offered on a case-by-case basis if it can be demonstrated that COVID-19 has impacted their ability to complete. Students need to be aware that later due dates will likely impact on the examination process (i.e., examiners and assessor input) due to the time of the year and proximity to the Christmas holiday period. It is expected that there will be consequential delays in results being available.

Students can apply for an extension by filling out an Application for Extension of Time (AS-503) online form.

We are pleased to advise that the University has approved the following fees-free extensions for postgraduate students enrolled in research courses:

  • A fees free extension of two months for students enrolled in a sub-doctoral postgraduate research component of 90 or 120 points who are due to submit on or before 28 February 2022, and who can demonstrate that their research has been impacted by the Covid-19 epidemic.
  • A fees free extension of one month for students enrolled in a sub-doctoral postgraduate research component of 30 to <90 points who are due to submit in 2021 and who can demonstrate that their research has been impacted by the Covid-19 epidemic.

The extensions are available to both domestic and international students, but international students based in New Zealand will need to consider the impact of any extension on their student visa before they apply. If the extension enrolment will extend beyond the end date of their student visa then they will need to apply for a new student visa.

We hope that these provisions will help to mitigate the impact of Covid-19 and the latest lockdown on students’ capacity to complete their research project successfully. Existing extension provisions will also continue to be available if needed.

Students can apply for the extension by filling out the Application for Extension of Time (AS-503) online. The form can be accessed on Forms for Students. They will need to demonstrate that their ability to complete their research on time was impacted by Covid-19. This could be through the submission of a statement from them outlining the impact on their research accompanied by a supporting statement from their supervisor.

If students have questions about applying for an extension they can contact us for advice.
