The Scholarship was established in 2019 and is funded by the Eyal & Marilyn Ofer Family Foundation, a philanthropic foundation supporting education and the arts. The Foundation’s affiliate, O.G. Energy, is the majority shareholder in New Zealand Oil & Gas.

The main purpose of the Scholarship is to encourage and support students enrolled in the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) specialising in either Chemical and Materials Engineering or Mechanical Engineering at the University of Auckland who intend to develop their career in the petroleum sector in New Zealand.
