The Scholarship was established in 2018 and is funded by an Endeavour Fund grant from the Ministry of Business, Employment and Innovation (MBIE) awarded to the School of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Science at the University of Auckland.

The main purpose of the Scholarship is to support PhD students at the University of Auckland who are undertaking research on the microbiology of the hindgut in seaweed-eating fish.
