Prize Value Criteria
3M Littmann Prize for Clinical Skills 3M Littmann Stethoscope The Prize will be awarded annually to the student achieving the top performance in the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) of the Professional and Clinical Skills 2 (PCS2) module of the MBChB Part III.
ADHB Director of Nursing Prize $500 The prize will be awarded annually to the final year student who has the most distinguished clinical practice within the Bachelor of Nursing programme, culminating in an excellent performance during the final clinical semester.
Alan Simpson Memorial Prize $750 The Prize will be awarded annually to the MBChB Part VI student who achieves the best overall performance in the final year Paediatrics assessments and recognises excellence in both academic and clinical performance.
Alice Bush Memorial Prize $500 The Prize will be awarded annually to the student who secures the highest overall grade in the Paediatrics attachment of the MBChB Part V.
Aseptic Dispensing Prize $200 The Prize will be awarded annually to the student achieving the highest grade(s) in the Aseptic Dispensing component of the final year of the Pharmacy programme.
The Auckland Medical History Society Essay Prize $500 The Prize will be awarded annually to the full-time student at Stage 3 or Honours level at the University of Auckland who achieves the highest mark in a 5,000 word essay or a portfolio of two 2,500 word essays, on a subject/subjects relating to the history of medicine.
Australia and New Zealand Society for Geriatric Medicine Prize $500 The Prize will be awarded annually to the full-time student achieiving the best assessment in the clinical geriatric medicine attachment.
Australian & New Zealand College of Anaesthesiology Prize AUD$500 in book vouchers The Prize will be awarded annually to the full-time student ranked first in the class for their performance in the Anaesthesiology attachment of the MBChB Part IV.
BHSc Conjoint Year One Prize $1250 The Prize will be awarded annually to a suitable candidate who is a full-time student achieving the highest grades in the first three semesters of a BHSc conjoint degree.
BHSc Year One Prize $1250 The Prize will be awarded annually to a suitable candidate who is a full-time student achieving the highest grades in the first three semesters of the BHSc degree.
BMEdSc(Hons) Vision in Medical Science Prizes $250 First Place
$150 Second Place
Two Prizes will be awarded annually to the two full-time students who achieve the highest marks in the oral presentation component of the Bachelor of Medical Sciences (Honours) degree. The student with the highest mark will be awarded $250 and the student with the second highest mark will be awarded $150 (see Note i).
Brenda Dawson Award $250 The Award will be made annually to the person who, as nominated by their peers, has demonstrated helpfulness, co-operation and support to their classmates during their MBChB. The nominated student will be in Part VI of their MBChB, just prior to qualification.
Butland Prize $300 The Prize will be awarded annually to the student who, is judged to have shown most clinical ability during their final year of an MBChB. The best performance is determined by the number of clinical distinctions achieved.
Calvin Ring Prize for Clinical Ophthalmology $1000 The Prize will be awarded annually to the full-time student achieving the best performance in the Calvin Ring Prize competition. Up to twelve candidates each year will be offered the chance to participate in this competition. The candidates will be selected on the basis of results of the MBChB Part V OSCE Examination. Candidates will be tested on their examination skills and clinical ophthalmological expertise and may be required to examine patients and view clinical slide transparencies. The candidate with the highest score will be awarded the Prize.
Carrick Robertson Prize $300 The Prize will be awarded annually to the MBChB Part VI student who achieves the highest marks in clinical assessments conducted by the Head of the Department of Surgery.
David Scott Prize in Diabetes and Metabolic Medicine $800 The Prize will be based on a case report of a patient seen during the current academic year and the closing date will be 1 November. Only case reports for patients seen in the current academic year will be eligible.
Dean's Medal Medal The Prize will be awarded annually to the final year student(s) who have made an outstanding contribution to the academic development of the faculty whilst undertaking their undergraduate studies (see Note i).
Dean’s Prize – MBChB Part IV $250 The Prize will be awarded annually to the full-time student achieving the highest overall MBChB Part IV grade.
Dean’s Prize – MBChB Part V $250 The Prize will be awarded annually to the full-time student achieving the best overall marks in the MBChB Part V.
Department of Anaesthesiology Prize $150 The Prize will be awarded annually to the full-time student achieving the highest overall grade in Anaesthesiology for the MBChB Part IV.
Department of Medicine Prize $200 The Prize will be awarded annually to the full-time student achieving the highest overall grade in Medicine based on their combined examination and clinical marks for the MBChB Part IV.
Douglas Pharmaceuticals Prize in Clinical Communication Skills $500 The Prize will be awarded annually to the fifth-year medical student with the best all round performance in communication skills, based on appropriate written and clinical examinations in Phase 2 (Parts IV and V) of the MBChB.
Douglas Robb Prize Up to $1600 The Prize will be awarded annually for the most distinguished academic performance throughout the programme of study for the MBChB degree at the University of Auckland.

$700 The Prize will be awarded annually to the medical student with the most distinguished overall academic performance in MBChB Part II.
Elizabeth Michaels Uniforms Prize $500 The prize will be made annually to the final year student who has demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities and peer support throughout the Bachelor of Nursing programme, as voted by the completing class.
Eric Hector Goodfellow Memorial Prize Up to $1600 The Prize will be awarded annually for the most distinguished academic performance throughout the entire programme of study from among those completing Phase I of the MBChB.
Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences Doctoral Publication Excellence Prize $1,000 The Prize will be awarded annually to the doctoral student enrolled in the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences who, in the year prior to the award, had published an academic journal article deemed by the selection panel to be the most meritorious doctoral candidate publication of the year.
Fertility Associates Prize $500 The Prize will be awarded each year to the student completing the Degree of Master of Health Sciences in Health Psychology or Master of Health Psychology with the most outstanding all-round performance over the programme as a whole.
Flora Smith Prize in Pathology $500 The Prize will be awarded annually to the MBChB Part V student who has displayed the best all-round performance in Pathology throughout the MBChB.
Global Public Health Prize $1000 The Prize will be awarded annually to the student who has obtained the highest overall marks in POPHLTH 715 (Global Public Health) and either POPHLTH 752 (Special Topic: Case Studies in Global Health) or one other postgraduate course in Public Health as determined each year by the Associate Dean of Research of the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences in consultation with one academic staff member of the Department of Social and Community Health.
Green Cross Health Prize for Most Supportive Student $250 The Prize will be awarded annually to the full-time final year student who was selected by their peers as having been the most supportive to their colleagues during the Bachelor of Pharmacy degree.
Integrated Pharmacy Studies Prize $200 The Prize will be awarded annually to the student achieving the highest grades in the Integrated Pharmacy Studies component of the final year of the Pharmacy programme.
J D K North Prize in Clinical Medicine $1,000 The Prize will be awarded annually to the MBChB Part VI student who attains the highest marks in a clinical assessment conducted by clinicians of the School of Medicine.
John McLeod Prize in Public Health $400 The Prize will be awarded to the outstanding student completing the Postgraduate Diploma of Public Health or Part I of the Master of Public Health in the School of Population Health at the University of Auckland.
J S Werry Prize in Psychiatry $500 The Prize will be awarded annually to the student who secures the highest overall marks in the Psychiatry attachment of the MBChB.
Kingsley Mortimer Memorial Prize $100 The Prize will be awarded annually to the full-time student who achieved the highest mark in the practical skills tests for the MBChB Part II.
Law and Ethics Prize $500 The Prize will be awarded annually to the student achieving the highest grades in the Law and Ethics component of the final year of the Pharmacy programme.
Leukaemia and Blood Cancer Prize $300 The Prize will be awarded annually to the student achieving the highest marks in the Blood, Immunity and Infection module of the MBChB 321 course.
Mary Bullivant Prize in Physiology $400 The Prize will be awarded annually for distinction in postgraduate studies undertaken by a medical student in the Department of Physiology.
Master of Health Psychology First Year Student Prize
Up to $1,000
The Prize will be awarded annually to the full-time Master of Health Psychology student who achieves the overall highest grade point average across the coursework component of the degree. A student must average a minimum of 7.00 to be considered for a Prize.

The Prizes will be awarded annually to the full-time students achieving the highest marks for their presentations in OPTOM 570.
Orthopaedic Surgery Prize $500 The Prize will be awarded annually to the full-time student enrolled in the MBChB Part IV who has achieved the highest overall marks in the Musculoskeletal attachment, based on their combined examination and ward attachment marks.
OTC Medicines Management Prize $250 The Prize will be awarded annually to the student who achieves the highest overall mark in the OTC medicines management component of Professional Pharmacy Studies (PHARMACY 409).
Pain Medicine Prize AU$500 The Prize will be awarded annually to the full-time student ranked first in the class for their performance in Pain Medicine (Anaesthesiology) for the MBChB Part IV.
Peg Wood Award $500 The Award will be made annually to the student completing the Degree of Bachelor of Optometry at the University of Auckland with the best result in OPTOM 441.
Peter Christie Award Engraved Plaque The Award will be made annually to the student who has obtained the highest overall marks during the MBChB Part IV in the general surgical attachment.
Pharmaceutical Society of New Zealand Part III Prize $250 and Engraved Plaque The Prize will be awarded each year to the candidate achieving the highest marks in Part III of the Bachelor of Pharmacy programme.
Pharmaceutical Society of New Zealand Prize $500 and Engraved Plaque The Prize will be awarded annually to the candidate achieving the highest overall marks in the final year of the pharmacy programme.
Pharmacy Guild Prize $500 The Prize will be awarded annually based on the best overall performance in Parts II – IV of the Bachelor of Pharmacy degree.
Pharmacy Management Prize $500 in total The Prize will be awarded annually to the student group that achievesthe highest overall grade for the pharmacy management component ofProfessional Pharmacy Studies (PHARMACY 409).
Pharmacy Research Dissertation Prizes $500 in total The Prizes will be awarded annually to the student groups that achieve the highest overall grades for the final year group dissertation in the Bachelor of Pharmacy degree.
Population Health Prize $250 Two Prizes will be awarded annually to the students who submit the best individual piece of work for a Distinction grade in the Population Health Intensive component of the MBChB Part V. One Prize will be awarded for creative writing and one Prize will be awarded for an academic essay.
Prize in Medical Humanities $200 The Prize will be awarded annually to the student who obtains the highest mark for the final essay in the course MBCHB 311 (Medical Humanities Electives).
ProCare Annual Prize in General Practice $2000 Two Prizes will be awarded annually. One each to be awarded to a Māori and a Pacific student who secures the highest overall marks for the General Practice attachment of the MBChB Part V.
Professional, Clinical & Communication Skills Prize $200 The Prize will be awarded annually to the student who obtains the highest mark in the PCS2 module (Professional, Clinical & Communication Skills 2) in conjunction with an excellent performance in the history taking station in the PCCS OSCE.
Professional Pharmacy Studies Prize $250 and Engraved Plaque The Prize will be awarded annually to the candidate achieving the highest grades in the Professional Pharmacy Studies component of the final year of the Pharmacy programme.
Psychiatry Prize $500 The Prize will be awarded annually to the full-time student achieving the best overall grade in Psychiatry for the MBChB Part V.
RANZCOG Women’s Health Prize AUD$500 The Prize will be awarded annually to a full-time MBChB Part VI student who has achieved general excellence in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
Raymond Harry Hawkins Prize in Undergraduate Optometry Research $550 The Prize will be awarded annually to the student producing the best Optometry project in course OPTOM 570 Research in Advanced Optometric Science.
Richards Prize in Primary Health Care $500 The Prize will be awarded annually for the best elective report presented by students who choose to work in the field of Primary Health Care (General Practice or other areas of First Contact Care). This will include experience either in New Zealand or abroad. In the event that there is no elective candidate who meets these criteria, the Prize may be made to the MBChB Part VI student who performs best in the General Practice attachment.
Rotary Club of Auckland Scholarship for The Most Distinguished Medical Graduate of the Year $6,500 The Prize will be awarded annually to the MBChB Part VI student with the most distinguished academic performance, taking into account personal qualities and all-round abilities.
Royal NZ College of General Practitioners 5th Year General Practice Prize $1000 The Prize will be awarded annually to the MBChB Part V student who achieves the highest overall marks in the General Practice component.
Royal NZ College of General Practitioners Prize $2000   The Prize will be awarded annually to the final-year medical student who is considered to have shown the best performance overall in the Family Practice component of the MBChB. Special attention will be paid to performance during Part VI.
School of Population Health BHSc (Honours) Prize $250   The Prize will be awarded annually to the full-time student enrolled in the School of Population Health who achieves the highest GPA in the BHSc (Honours) programme.
School of Population Health Prize in Public Health $500 The Prize will be awarded annually to the most outstanding student completing Part II of the Master of Public Health in the School of Population Health at the University of Auckland.
Sir William Liley Prize for Excellence in Reproductive Biology $500 The Prize will be awarded annually to the student achieving the highest mark in MEDSCI 313 (Reproductive Biology). As a minimum standard, the student must achieve an A grade.
S R de la Mare Memorial Prize $250 The Prize will be awarded annually to the woman who is judged to have the best academic record for Phase 2 of the MBChB.
Sysmex Award for Health Informatics $1000 and registration fee for HINZ Conference The Award will be awarded annually to the full-time student enrolled in POPLHLTH 303 (Health Informatics) who has submitted the winning essay about a health informatics innovation (see Note i).
Thomson Reuters Pharmacy Law & Ethics Prize $200 The Prize will be awarded annually to the full-time student achieving the second highest mark in the law and ethics component of Professional Pharmacy Studies (PHARMACY 409).
T R Plunkett Prize $500 The Prize will be awarded annually to the MBChB Part VI student who has achieved the highest marks in the study of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
University of Auckland Prize in Applied Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics $500 The Prize will be awarded annually to the best student in Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics in Phase 2 of the MBChB. The evaluation for the Prize may include an oral examination.
University of Auckland School of Nursing Prize $500 The Prize will be given annually to the final year student who has achieved the highest academic performance throughout the Bachelor of Nursing programme.
Waikato Medical Research Foundation Best Paper Award $1000 The Award will be made annually to the student enrolled in the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences at the University of Auckland who, in the year prior to the award, has submitted the most meritorious paper for publication in an academic journal (see Note ii).
W E Henley Prize in Clinical Medicine $300 The Prize will be awarded annually to the MBChB Part VI student who submits the best case history with associated commentary, while attached to the Department of Medicine.
Wilson-Allison Memorial Prize in Dermatology $750 and a Certificate The Prize will be awarded annually to the MBChB Part IV student who submits the best essay of 2000 words or less to be judged by the President of the NZDSI and the Head of the Department of Medicine (see Note ii).
Wolters Kluwer Prize
$500 The Prize will be made annually to the final year student who has achieved the highest academic and clinical practice performance throughout the Bachelor of Nursing programme.
