Project code: ART002

Part of a larger digital humanities initiative to create an interactive archive of William F. Cody, this project looks specifically at Cody’s interactions, Wild West shows, and influence in German speaking countries during his European tours (1809/1906). This project will help to identify well-known works of fiction set in and non-fiction reported from the American West published in German in Germany prior to the arrival his arrival in 1890. The Scholar will also look at the newspaper promotional articles, ads, posters, and tour programs, to establish what Cody and the Wild West was “selling” regarding the American West. Finally, the project will turn to the reception of that message in Germany using newspaper reviews, editorial cartoons, illustrations, and other forms of reception.
