Employer Stories: Sunithi Sathiachander, Windcave
Windcave is one of NZ’s fastest growing companies and has offices across the globe. Recruiting Manager, Sunithi, gives us the inside scoop on Windcave’s intern and grad placements.
“Windcave provide innovative end-to-end payment solutions, ensuring transactions are secure, safe and of course, smooth. Based in Auckland, Windcave works on complex projects that focus on the entire payment chain – from the design and manufacture of payment terminals; to payments as a service (PaaS) software – with acquiring/merchant services being our most recent trendsetting area. Since 1999 we’ve grown from a single floor office of 8-10 people to about 250+ employees across 4 countries.
“We’re always on the lookout to build our talent pipeline. With new projects underway, we wanted to recruit graduates at entry level positions (both full & part-time) via our graduate and intern roles. Naturally, it made sense to get in touch with CDES. After meeting with Kate and understanding the University of Auckland landscape, we were able to set up an event for the following week.
“We did a trial run with an intern pop-up event at the University and we were massively impressed! Initially, we were looking at hiring for positions in both Support and Qualitative Assurance; but with students showing keen interest we quickly opened up paid intern roles in Software Development, Electronic Assembly and Merchant Services.
“Through our experience with CDES, we learned what young minds want and where they want to go. We started off looking to hire 2-3 interns and actually doubled that in the number of final placements! The caliber of students is very high. They have been extremely responsive and keen to learn what Windcave is all about. We’re actually in the process of discussing continued employment with the University of Auckland interns, after their internships are complete.
From a company perspective, we now have the ability to engage students
with our brand and bring high caliber talent into the organization. That’s
gold. In return, students are able to get a feel for the industry and test out
their class knowledge by applying it to the workforce
"A few ways students can stand out from the crowd and impress potential employers; is by demonstrating that you are open and flexible to learning – that’s the classic combination that any employer would look for when hiring from campus. And of course, good grades!
