Andrea Crasta

Andrea is studying a Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Laws Conjoint at the University of Auckland.

Did your career plan change as you studied?

I think my career plan did change as I studied. Prior to attending university, I did not study any business-related subjects. This change in career plan was largely influenced by my lecturers, whose personal experiences inspired me. Therefore, I decided to study a conjoint degree of law and commerce. In hindsight, I am glad I chose to expand the range of papers I studied because it helped me recognise that I really enjoy finance and accounting. Overall, I believe that studying helped me build on my career plan and changed it for the better.

Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years’ time?

My goal right now is to be working in a job that allows me to continuously upskill and take on new challenges. It is important to me to always do my best. Therefore, no matter what the role is, I will seek out any opportunity to grow and work towards building a successful career. Ideally, I see myself attaining more managerial responsibilities by taking the lead on incoming projects. Further, I wish to complete my CA qualification and use that knowledge to gain some overseas experience within the industry.

How valuable was your internship programme for you as a student? How did this help you fine-tune where you wanted to head?

My summer internship at Baker Tilly Staples Rodway was truly rewarding because it challenged me to step out of my comfort zone. The transition from being a university student to working within the Audit team was a steep learning curve, but the entire team were always willing to help and answer any questions I had. They took the time to ensure I understood each task and the reason behind why it was carried out.

As an intern, I had the opportunity to work with multiple teams on different engagements and went on a client visit by the second week. The in-depth training provided made me feel more comfortable and confident when interacting with clients.

I genuinely enjoyed my internship experience and learned a lot working alongside an excellent team. I am excited to see what my future with Baker Tilly Staples Rodway will bring.
