Did your career plans change as you studied?

My career plans didn’t change much; I started my first year of University knowing that I wanted to graduate with a BSc in Computer Science and work in the technology industry. I had taken a gap year to think about what I wanted to study, and where I wanted to work in the future. I didn’t plan on doing a double major initially, but I found the papers offered under Logic and Computation really interesting, so I added this towards the end of my degree.

Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years’ time?

I see myself moving up the ranks of Software Development. One of the things I love about the industry is how fast-moving it is; there's so much to learn, and so many newly evolving things, that I’ll never be at a loss of what to learn next.

While I’m working in the front-end now, I’d like to become a Full-Stack Developer over the next few years. I see myself taking on some leadership roles, with maybe a stent of contract work overseas (travel permitting).

How valuable was your internship OR work experience for you as a student? How did this help you fine-tune where you wanted to head?

I highly value my internship experience with Pushpay. It provided four months of great mentorship, constant feedback, and lots of coffee!

I finished my internship with a wide variety of new skills, and a couple of new programming languages under my belt (these helped me with my Computer Science classes the next year). A friend recommended Summer of Tech to me for internships. It confirmed that I wanted to work as a Software Engineer, and I was ecstatic when Pushpay offered me a full-time role when I finished my studies.
