Did your career plans change as you studied?
I did not have a set career plan when I first started my degree at the university. I was keen on learning and getting better in Information Technology as a field of profession but I was not entirely sure about the kind of role or a set career plan that I would like to pursue after completing my degree.
Initially, I was quite interested in pursuing a career in artificial intelligence (AI) or machine learning and I explored this interest by enrolling myself in different courses offered at the university. However, I always had a soft spot for database systems and software development and during my time as a student it was difficult for me to pick a career plan that suited me. The wide range of subjects offered at the University of Auckland helped me gain an extensive knowledge in the field of Information Technology and also understand real-world problems related to it. I am thankful for all the learning events, workshops and seminars hosted by the ICT Programme and Velocity. These helped me understand what I am actually good at as well as helped to choose a career best suited for me. In one of these seminars, I met my fellow colleagues from Davanti Consulting where they helped me to understand how I could apply my knowledge in subjects like AI and machine learning with the help of my programming skills to solve real-world problems. A bit of everything is what exactly I was looking for in a career!
Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years’ time?
Currently, I am keeping an open-mind and trying to get hands-on experience with all the different types of roles and opportunities that come my way given that I am relatively new in the industry. However, in the future with a good amount of experience delivering real-world solutions and collaborating with colleagues, I would like to move into a leadership role and on the path to becoming a CTO (Chief Technology/Technical Officer). Most of all, I hope I am still as dedicated and passionate about my work as I am today and I hope to never stop learning and growing my knowledge of the domain.
How valuable was your internship OR work experience for you as a student? How did this help you fine-tune where you wanted to head?
My internship was an essential part of my master’s program. Networking sessions arranged by the ICT Programme that led up to my internship with Davanti Consulting were informative and helpful in understanding the New Zealand workforce and work environment. Most of all, it helped build lasting relationships with the people from the industry which was invaluable.
During my internship, development of my practical and interpersonal skills were key as I got a chance to work on a real-world project with real stakeholders which helped me understand how to interact with clients and how to present solutions back to the client. Davanti Consulting is an incredible group of curious and driven people that love to help out when in need while simultaneously pushing you out of your comfort zone to give you an opportunity to grow and learn on the job. The importance of teamwork and collaboration was well understood during my internship and these are some of the key takeaways for me from my internship experience as a student. The best thing about a consulting firm is that your clients are varied from different industries and every day there are new challenges and experiences which really helped me understand that it was the right place for me.
