asBUILT Student Profile

Meet asBUILT at the CDES Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths Expo!

Lucy Nie

  • Survey Technician
  • Master of Architecture (Professional)

Did your career plans change as you studied?
My original plans were to work for an architectural company, but since being hired by asBUILT which is a consulting agency digitally specializing in the engineering side of the built environment, I have had no regrets. I was originally hired as an intern by the company at this very expo last year, and since then I have been working here full time.

Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years’ time?
My views are very open-minded on what can happen in the next 5- 10 years, especially because I have already started my career on a different tangent. However, I still want to achieve becoming a registered architect in the future.

How valuable was your internship for you as a student? How did this help you fine-tune where you wanted to head?
My internship with asBUILT was incredibly crucial for me to get to where I am. I have always wanted to become experienced in BIM (Building Information Modelling). My internship here started off with site work, specifically doing surveying of the Auckland Hospital because of my architectural background and spatial awareness. However, by showing that I was a valuable asset, I was able to be promoted to work as a BIM Technician for the company, which is exactly what I want to be doing.
