Induja Rasanathan – KPMG Audit hire
Hear from Induja, who worked closely with the team at CDES to get application ready, and land a job at one of the Big 4 accounting and advisory firms!
“My name is Induja Rasanathan, and I am a born and bred New Zealander, whose family migrated here from Sri Lanka. Growing up on Auckland’s North Shore, I completed a Bachelor of Health Science (BHSc) and a Masters in Professional Accounting after secondary school.
"I am currently working on the provisional entry requirements to Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, whilst finishing my final papers at University. However, in March 2021, I am excited to begin working at KPMG’s Audit division in Auckland.
"To get an offer from the “Big 4” accounting firms, you have got to find a way to make your application stand out. I knew it depended on the strength and originality of my application and that meant, for me, that there was minimal room for error. This is where I realised that my CV, cover letter, LinkedIn page, and even my video interview submissions needed assistance.
"The team at Career Development and Employability Services (CDES) were simply wonderful. They offered multiple drop-in sessions and appointments that fitted around my schedule. I saw both Liz and Sarah (CDES Career Development Consultants) for support throughout 2019 and early 2020. Liz provided some really helpful and constructive feedback on the content and presentation of my CV, while Sarah assisted me in practicing my interview skills and accessing practice psychometric tests. Both of which were fundamental aspects to master, within the recruitment process to progress further.
"I completed the 2020 interview process, which was multi-faceted and extensive in late March. The process involved two video submissions, and if successful, a ‘face-to-face’ interview which was conducted via Skype due to COVID-19 lockdown restrictions. I was fortunate enough to be interviewed by Audit directors and managers who were all extremely friendly, and conducted the interviews in a more conversational tone, which made the daunting prospect of the final interview much more relaxing. I was offered roles within 48 hours of completing final interviews, and ultimately received four different employment offers from Big 4 accounting firms.
"I would highly recommend that students aiming for any competitive graduate schemes seek support from CDES. In addition to the career support, it's vital that students maintain their focus on doing their best academically, gaining valuable work and/or extra-curricular experience and improving their soft skills. Employers are interested in graduates who are able to function effectively in the real world which is why I think the most important thing students can do is to focus on gaining professional experience outside of their academic commitments. This means following basic etiquette in the workplace, being punctual, presentable and communicating effectively. Ultimately, you never know what opportunities may be ahead in your life so present yourself well at all times and stay positive”.
