Student Stories: Antony Yu
Antony Yu, Project Manager at Frequency, talks about how CDES helped him build confidence and get work ready.
"Before I arrived at the University of Auckland - back when I was in high school - I knew I wanted to be an engineer. Figuring out what engineering discipline was another story – I considered software and mechanical engineering, before deciding on civil. Even with a relatively set plan, it was tricky to figure out which path to take and I often felt torn during my years of study.
"When I started applying for jobs in my second year, I wasn’t getting much success. In my third year I discovered CDES: they were offering a CV workshop which was exactly what I needed at the time. I ended up going to the workshop every week and got to know a number of people in the CDES team. One of the Career Development Consultants, Liz Barry, reached out to check how I was going, and we ended up working together on my networking and interviewing skills. CDES was a great help to me – I just wish I’d started using their services earlier. With my CV up to date and a better grasp on the interviewing process, things started to turn around. Even though I’m normally a pretty nervous person, I felt more confident to act like myself, and the whole process got easier.
The CDES team has great tools and it’s worth getting in touch early in your studies so you’re prepared when the right job comes along!
"After I finished University, I got a role as a Project Manager at Frequency – it’s a medium-sized project management engineering consultancy, so I’ll be able to use my skills without being pigeonholed in a strictly engineering role. I was happy to find a job that aligns with so many of my interests and that has scope to grow other skills like management, plus I’m getting to work with high-level clients like NZTA, Auckland Transport, Air New Zealand and more.
"Asking for help isn’t easy, but don’t be afraid to do it – the CDES team has great tools and it’s worth getting in touch early in your studies so you’re prepared when the right job comes along!"
