Student Stories: Ben Fulton
Ben Fulton sought support from CDES throughout his studies which helped him develop the skills required to find a role at a top consulting firm.
“Engineering is a natural fit for me – I’ve always enjoyed the applied aspects of maths and problem solving. I am in my final semester of a BA/BE (Bachelor of Arts / Bachelor of Engineering) conjoint degree, specialising in French and majoring in Engineering Science. It’s an interesting mix of study areas, but it’s been incredible for me to deepen my passion and understanding of the arts with papers in economics, philosophy, theology, history, Māori, Latin and politics. I’m fortunate that my degree has panned out as well as I hoped - it was a bit of shift for me to move up to Auckland from Christchurch four years ago at the start of my degree, but I’m so glad I did.
During my studies I tried to attend as many relevant seminars and workshops as I could – as I always took away useful advice.
"From day one at University I have been thinking ahead to my future career, so I engaged with CDES regularly during my study years. During my studies I tried to attend as many relevant seminars and workshops as I could – as I always took away useful advice. I have attended and benefitted from workshops focussed on LinkedIn, ‘Finding your Career Direction’, psychometric testing and CVs and cover letters. The career expos provide unrivalled access to industry professionals, particularly the employers at the engineering event and STEM Career Expo.
"The CDES drop-in desk has been invaluable to me as I have gone through many iterations of developing my CV with help and personalised advice from the CDES career consultants. They’ve also taken the time to have in-depth discussions about the direction of my career, their advice being refreshingly honest and grounded in personal stories. The advice is really useful and something I needed at the time after several unsuccessful job applications. Liz, from CDES, also put me in touch with a Project Manager, opening up my eyes to a new career pathway for me.
And all of this hard work preparing for my future over the past few years has paid off! I have just accepted a role as an Associate with the Boston Consulting
Group (BCG), a top consulting firm.
"There is no doubt that the assistance with my CV and cover letter helped me in getting through the very difficult ‘first gate’ of CV screening during the application process of Management Consulting firms in Australia.
"And all of this hard work preparing for my future over the past few years has paid off! I have just accepted a role as an Associate with the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), a top consulting firm. I am really excited to be starting this role in Melbourne next year! The application process was really positive, the HR and Management team really wanted me to succeed and were friendly and easy-going. I did a lot of preparation for the interview, as most management consulting firm interviews involve case studies which can be really daunting. Preparing and practising is key for nailing these and getting through to the final selection. I have experienced many disappointments before this BCG offer, but I worked on assured humility and backing myself when I faced set backs. And the rejection letters have made the excitement of receiving a job at a place I really want to work even sweeter!”
