Student Stories: Jess Zhang
Jess Zhang met with a CDES Career Development Consultant who helped her find a job that she loves.
“I come from a little village on an island that’s detached from mainland China. I am in my final year of studying, with a Computer Science major and Information Systems minor. As a little kid, I loved playing games on our computer and when things would go wrong with the old machine, I’d fiddle around with it and get it to work again – it made sense to me that I’d end up studying computer science later on. Going into my first year at University, I had no idea where I wanted to take my degree except that I wanted to use it to help others. However, I didn’t settle into University that well, I struggled to find meaning in what I was doing and I grew more and more restless. Eventually my attitude changed when I realised studying is a responsibility – I owed it to myself to do well and I needed to discipline myself.
"I went to one of the daily drop-in sessions and met with Lisa and she made it such an enjoyable experience, she was super friendly and patient and it felt like catching up with a friend, she really cared."
"Once I settled into university life, I knew I needed to get an internship for practical experience, but I still lacked the confidence to apply for one. I’m so thankful that I was pointed towards CDES. CDES offers career support services, I knew they existed but I just never paid much attention to it as I assumed it was just there for show – how wrong was I! I went to one of the daily drop-in sessions and met with Lisa and she made it such an enjoyable experience, she was super friendly and patient and it felt like catching up with a friend, she really cared. This unique personal experience was such a big change from the perspective that this University is a business. It renewed my energy!
"I had help with my CV and it went through a massive transformation that resulted in me landing an interview with my current employer, Sentient Software. Going into the interview I was a nervous wreck, however what took place was a fun conversation about my passions and struggles. Receiving the email saying my application was successful was a huge surprise and huge confidence boost because I hadn’t expected to actually get the job!
Today I am in a job that I love! I find that I’m able to wake up early and be excited to go to work because I love my work and the people I work with.
"My advice going forward would be to trust, let go, have faith and just try your very best. Listen to the words of wisdom by those more experienced than us. I got 'lucky' that I had a friend who pushed me to apply and to get my CV checked, I would thoroughly recommend booking in with a career consultant - Lisa listened to my story without judgement and gave me pointers on areas that needed improvement.
"Today I am in a job that I love! I find that I’m able to wake up early and be excited to go to work because I love my work and the people I work with. I can feel that this is the environment in which I will thrive."
