Student Stories: Lucy Nie
Lucy Nie attended the CDES Internship Career Expo last year and made connections to help her secure a job with asBUILT.
"I decided to attend last year’s CDES Internship Career Expo after receiving emails inviting me to come along, and I remember thinking, ‘Maybe it could help to better my chances at finding an internship or gaining some cool work experience?' It turns out the benefits were even better than that! Through connecting at the Internship Expo, I managed to secure a job with asBUILT, a BIM company! I am currently studying towards a Master of Architecture at the University of Auckland, and will be graduating at the end of the year, so knowing that I have work experience under my belt before I even graduate is an awesome feeling!
"The CDES Internship Career Expo gave me the opportunity to meet potential employers face to face and find out what roles are available in the building industry. Although it was initially daunting, being able to have real and honest conversations with recruiters meant that I could find out what roles were available, what each company had to offer me, and what kind of person they were looking to recruit. It was also a great opportunity to simply start a dialogue, and much easier to secure an interview compared to filling out more online job application forms.

"Everyone knows that talking to potential employers can be nerve-wracking, but I think the best advice I can give to anyone attending future expos is to be open to different companies and roles, there are more options out there than you realise. And be confident in your own abilities.
"It is also important to show that you are enthusiastic and have initiative by printing out a few copies of a well-formatted CV — this will definitely help to catch an employer’s eye. One thing I know that recruiters are looking for in a potential employee is someone who can handle responsibility and having a positive energy that will benefit the work environment.
"My final piece of advice? Go to an expo! You’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain."
