Student Stories: Weilian Du

Weilian shares the skills she gained from the CDES Workplace Insights Programme.

"Ni hao, I’m Weilian Du. I came to the University of Auckland in July 2017 as a Study Abroad student from China. Recently, I graduated with a Master of Commerce in Information Systems, where I was proud to be the first to receive the Study Abroad Alumni Award.

"Right now, I am enjoying an internship at Foodstuffs as a Business Analyst. And I am really excited to have accepted a role as a Data Analyst at KPMG, which I will start in the new year!

"I heard about Career Development and Employability Services (CDES) and the Workplace Insights Programme (WIP) through a friend, who raved about how helpful it had been. He was not wrong. My experience with WIP and CDES has been incredibly amazing and has helped me to get these great experiences.

"While I was enrolled in WIP, I was also applying for jobs and attended many networking events and office tours. I was able to take what I learnt from the coaching sessions to real life events. What’s more, I was very lucky to connect with my Alumni Gary Fowler, through WIP who mentored me whenever I had any questions to do with networking encounters and work queries. Through Gary’s support and advice, I grew faster. For example, Gary helped me practice my 30-second self-introduction, or elevator pitch, which is super helpful in social networking as well as interviews.

I now have a great alumni who both mentored and supported me. The mentorship goes beyond the programme and enabled me to grow faster and stronger.

"I’m really thankful to CDES and the Workplace Insights Programme, I have not only improved both my confidence and my networking skills, but broadened my understanding of the Kiwi workplace; things like chatting with colleagues during breaks to help build relationships, as well as how to speak in more formal group discussions. Not only has this helped me during interviews, but also with my internship – when I have a meeting, coffee break or a group discussion."
