Did your career plans change as you studied?
When I started university, I was exposed to the different specialisations in engineering. Initially I wanted to do Software Engineering but after having a taste of different subjects in my first year, my interest grew more towards Electrical and Electronic Engineering. I found this field to be diverse as it offers a lot of different career options.
Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years’ time?
I see myself being a competent Electrical and Electronic Engineer in the future. This means to continue to expand my knowledge in different areas/business units. I would like to absorb as many new skills and experiences through my graduate programme so that I am able to choose an exciting and challenging role for myself. I would also like to grow professionally by pursuing my masters (part-time) and work towards becoming a Chartered Engineer.
How valuable was your internship for you as a student? How did this help you fine-tune where you wanted to head?
Internships have been very useful for me as a student. I was able to develop my technical and my interpersonal skills through different internship assigments. During each internship experience I got more insights on what the company I was working for did and I was able to gauge what work I would be interested in doing after I graduate.
I always wanted to be part of an organisation where I would be able to be part of projects from the initial stages to a project completion stage, like Downer does. That is why I decided to join this company. Since then, my experience at Downer as a graduate Electrical Engineer has taught me realistically what I like doing and most importantly what I need to learn to continue to expand my knowledge.
