Did your career plans change as you studied?
Definitely yes! I’ve had multiple career aspirations since my first year at university, there were times were I was super enthusiastic about robotics & artificial intelligence and moved to dreaming of starting my own company. But I always stuck on to my base of learning about power systems. My home city, Dubai, which is super fast in terms of growth and a pivotal point of Middle East’s energy industry, instilled my interest in the power industry.
From my second year, I interned every summer in three different countries which helped me get a bigger picture of power generation through to the retail stage and a global perspective of the industry.
Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years’ time?
In five years, I see myself at an ivy league institution pursuing an MBA after being through Powerco’s graduate programme, gaining the right experience and developing a thorough understanding of all business units.
Another five years down the lane, I dream big of running my own company. I keep pondering over several ideas that have crossed my mind whilst taking small steps every day in learning and hope my journey leads me to the right opportunities to get closer to my ambitions eventually.
How valuable was your internship for you as a student? How did this help you fine-tune where you wanted to head?
I joined Powerco as a Network Development Intern in 2018. It was my first job in the power industry in New Zealand. There was so much to learn and explore. I got opportunities to travel to several cities across the North Island as a part of the projects I was involved in. My manager was very supportive of my ambitions & helped me identify my areas of strength and gave me opportunities to test and develop technical skills.
Close to end of my internship, I decided Powerco was the right place for me to start my grad journey. Powerco offers a fantastic Graduate Programme to work alongside experienced industry professionals with rotations in departments such as electricity planning, design, protection engineering, network strategy and architecture.
I am currently working in the planning team and looking forward to all my other rotations. In my personal opinion, I would recommend current students to start with an internship to see if the work they do really excites them and move on to a graduate role to build up a strong base in understanding different business units which can possibly lead them to endless opportunities in the future.
