Overview

If you are a confident Te Reo Māori speaker and want to teach in Māori medium (immersion) or bilingual schools then this specialisation will give you the qualification to do so.

Areas of study

Educational theory, educational and development psychology, the sociology of education, effective teaching techniques and how to apply these in your teaching. Te Reo Māori, tikanga Māori and mātauranga Māori underpin this teaching programme.

What you will learn

You will develop knowledge of the curriculum for Māori medium schools Te Marautanga o Aotearoa and key learning areas. You will learn how to apply best teaching practice techniques to your teaching and link educational theory to your teaching practice. You will get many opportunities through practicum in schools to apply what you are learning, to understand what is like to teach in a classroom/school, and develop your own teaching style.

Career opportunities

With a degree in Māori Medium teaching you will be qualified to teach in mainstream, Māori medium and bilingual schools and classrooms. Our Huarahi Māori programme qualifies you to teach at primary and intermediate school level.
