Physical Education


By studying Physical Education as a degree subject you will develop physical education and health education skills and knowledge together with the skills to teach in this area.

Areas of study

The programme includes studies in outdoor education, bio-physical and socio-cultural sciences, teacher education, expressive movement, te ao kori, health education and sport. In your final year of study there are elective options to choose from such as teaching and coaching sport, outdoor leadership and recreation and leisure.

What you will learn

You will progressively develop the knowledge and skills to become an effective physical education and health education teacher. There is a strong emphasis on practical experience in schools (practicum), with some industry-related placements, which gives you the experience of what it is like to teach in this area as well as develop your teaching style.

Career opportunities include teaching physical education and health education teacher at secondary school level; sports coordination, management and coaching; fitness instructor and personal trainer; outdoor and adventure education programme leader.
