Geophysics

Overview

Geophysics is the study of the Earth and environment using physics and mathematics. It spans from the deep interior of the Earth to its surface, oceans and atmosphere. It investigates and aims to explain the physical phenomena we observe today to discover the past history and to model their future behaviour.

Areas of study

Within the specialisation it is possible to focus on applied, atmospheric or marine geophysics.

Career opportunities

Our geophysics specialisation is designed to prepare you for employment in areas which rely on a physics based understanding of our physical environment. These include basic and applied work in meteorology, oceanography, hydrology, exploration geophysics, natural hazards such as storms, floods, earthquakes and volcanoes, and pollution monitoring and other aspects of environmental physics.
