The Scholarship was established in 2003 and is funded by Paul Kelly, who was an American businessman with a long-term interest in tertiary education and who was a major supporter of the University of Auckland Business School.

The main purpose of the Scholarship is to encourage the development of a cadre of future leaders of business and society by promoting academic excellence and assisting outstanding students to reach their full potential.
