Wireless network

The University provides a wireless computer network based on the 802.11 standard.

The wireless network allows any suitably equipped device (eg, a laptop or PDA with a wireless network adapter) to connect to the University network and use resources such as internet access, CECIL, and Library databases.

Available networks

Speed
The connection speed of The University of Auckland wireless network is 128kb/s.

Cost
There is no charge for using the network or accessing the internet, but you may need to log in with your NetID and password to access certain services.

Networks
We provide 3 levels of access over 3 different wireless networks (SSIDs). If you connect to the wrong network, you may have limited services.

  • University of Auckland
For normal student and staff access

This network provides access to the normal services available via the University of Auckland website. It also provides a free ‘limited bandwidth’ Internet service and allows a University VPN to be run in order to access other University services. This access can provide for a high speed Internet connection if you are also connected to NetAccount via the Netlogin client (see below).
  • University of Auckland Guest
Available for general access, no logon required

This network provides access to the normal services available via the University of Auckland website. It does not provide for Internet access, VPN or NetAccount client access.
  • Eduroam
Used by visitors from other Eduroam enabled institutions

EduRoam is a wireless network that allows visiting members from other Eduroam member institutions to log in with their usual home "username/password" to a wireless network at participating campuses around the world, and gain access to resources at their home institution. To find out more, see the Eduroam website.

Areas covered by the wireless network

To use the wireless network, you must be within range of a Wireless Access Point (WAP).

We have installed WAPs in a number of locations on the City, Grafton and Tamaki campuses.

How to use the wireless network

Acceptable Use Policy
First, you must read and agree to the University of Auckland ICT Acceptable Use Policy, in particular to section 3.3 which covers connecting devices to the network. Read the policy on the Information Security Management website.

Functional requirements
Please note that your computer or PDA must be equipped with a wireless network adapter. You should consult your computer's manual to see if it has this functionality. Only some recent PDAs have the ability to work on a wireless network.

Wireless access for conference guests

Are you organising a conference and want your guests to have wireless internet access for the duration of the conference?

You need to contact the ITS Service Desk at least a week in advance to arrange the required number of temporary login accounts. These accounts allow your guests to connect to the wireless network using the same login option as the University's staff and students.

You'll be responsible for distributing the temporary usernames and passwords to your delegates. The passwords will be set to expire at the end of the conference, disabling the access.

Wireless network and the Premium/Staff Unlimited Plans

If you have purchased the Premium Plan, you may configure your wireless connection to use higher speed internet. The non-University websites that you view in this way will be counted against the 200MB monthly data allowance. See also Internet access.

To use the Premium Plan’s connection speed, you need to configure your browser to use the NetAccount EZproxy. See the instructions below. We'll publish intructions for other operating systems as they become available.
