Pacific student support

The Fale Pasifika complex houses the Centre for Pacific Studies, and is the ‘home base’ for Pacific students at The University of Auckland. The Fale complex is a centre of excellence for Pacific research, teaching and service, and its traditional Pacific Fale provides a space for discussion and support as well as teaching and learning. Even if you're not studying a Pacific Island language or taking one of our other courses, you're always welcome to drop by.

`O lagi Atea Moana is a place where Pacific students can meet, talk, have lunch and hang out. It's also the home of the Auckland University Students' Association's Pacific Islands Student Officer.

`O lagi Atea Moana is located on the 4th floor of the Students' Association building (just off the Quad), and has places to sit, shower facilities, a kitchenette and toilet. It's worth a visit, so if you need any help, call in.

The Tuākana programme supports Māori and Pacific students through academic tutoring and mentoring, providing students with a contact network to help them achieve academically and thrive in the university environment.

The Mauriora room, Room 502 of the Human Sciences Building (HSB), is the Māori and Pacific students' resource room. It is used for the Kaupapa Māori and Pacific tutorials when offered at Stage I, and for some Student Learning Centre tutorials. At other times, all Māori and Pacific students in the Anthropology Department are very welcome to use it as a study, peer tutoring and networking space. A small committee of Māori and Pacific students, including the liaison tutors, look after the room.

Business School support for Māori and Pacific students includes the Māori and Pacific Admission Scheme (MOPAS) and mentoring programmes such as MANA and the Tuākana programme. MOPAS is designed for Māori and Pacific students who do not have the required GPE for entry into a BCom or BBIM. Selection into MOPAS is done by interview at the beginning of each semester. MOPAS students are required to access a support programme once enrolled. This support includes academic help as well as mentoring. MOPAS students have a study centre (Te Marumaru), a small library and social activities are organised during the semester.

Support for Māori and Pacific students is offered by the National Institute of Creative Arts and Industries (NICAI) to students enrolled in its programmes.

NICAI is proud of its newly refurbished Whaianga room which enables Māori and Pacific students to hold tutorials and meetings and to engage in their communities on campus.

SPIES (South Pacific Islands Engineering Students) is the name of the Faculty of Engineering support group for Māori and Pacific students, and also the name given to the space for students (Māori and Pacific) enrolled in engineering programmes. SPIES students organise a range of social activities throughout the year including an annual retreat, trips and events.

Need some assistance with Mathematics or Statistics? Then the Māori and Pasifika Room is for you! Located on Level 4, Room 428 of the Maths and Physics Building (38 Princes Street), the room provides a quiet space for Pacific and Māori students of these subjects to get together and study, take a break, relax, access computers, attend a tutorial or have a coffee.

Māori and Pacific Psychology students receive support from the department, including Potu Ole Pasifika, a dedicated study space for Pacific students who are enrolled in the Psychology Department. There are also mentoring and support networks and other initiatives.
