Student Experience Survey
The Student Experience Survey replaces the former Learning and Teaching Survey from 2026.
Student Experience Survey: the basics
- Survey opening date: Monday 14 September 2026
- Survey closing date: Monday 28 September 2026
Purpose of the Survey
The University conducts the Student Experience Survey annually to understand students’ experiences and drive improvements based on their feedback. This survey replaces the former Learning and Teaching Survey and will be offered to all students, including those in research programmes. Information from the survey is used to help the University set priorities and plan for the coming year(s).
Eligibility
All current University of Auckland students are eligible to participate, including those enrolled in taught programmes (e.g. undergraduate and postgraduate coursework) and research programmes (e.g. sub-doctoral and doctoral study).
Survey content
The survey includes questions about many different aspects of the student experience. Students will be shown questions relevant to their mode of study:
- Taught students will receive questions related to coursework, teaching quality, and learning tools
- Research students will receive questions related to supervision and research facilities
All students will also be asked a set of questions on academic freedom and freedom of expression, aligned with national requirements across New Zealand universities.
Confidentiality
The Student Experience Survey is confidential. Students’ individual identities are never reported. The responses to most questions are aggregated in reports, and written comments are never linked to individuals’ names, usernames or student ID numbers.
Accessing the Survey
Students will be able to access the survey via individual link sent to their student email inbox. Alternatively, students can access the survey directly after being prompted to login to the University.
Prize Draw
By completing the survey, you’ll be entered into a prize draw to win:
- One of two $500 Prezzy virtual cards; or
- One of twenty-five $100 Prezzy virtual cards
Winners will be contacted via their student email address before October 2026.
Note: email invitations to the survey will have the ‘from’ address: Quality@auckland.ac.nz

How does the University use the student feedback?
Analysis of rated questions and open-ended comments provides important information to the University about students’ experience of learning and teaching. Results are reported to University committees and to faculties and service divisions.
What happens next?
The Pro Vice-Chancellor(Education) meets with each faculty dean and senior staff to review what students have said and what is planned in response. Student feedback is used to help determine University and faculty priorities for the next year.
Staff Resources for Survey Promotion
Staff can do a lot to help students understand the importance of the Learning and Teaching Survey, and every year the Academic Quality Office creates resources to assist staff to communicate with students about the survey. The PowerPoint slides about the survey (below) can be shown to classes, and information will be posted on the University website and on Canvas for students to see.
More about the survey
If you have been invited please let us know what you think, so we can build on what we’re getting right and make improvements where things aren’t working.
Questions have an emphasis on the learning and teaching aspects of students’ experience University as well as social factors which support students’ learning. Survey results are reported in aggregate to faculties each year and assist faculties to set priorities and areas of focus in learning and teaching.
If you have questions about the survey, please contact the Academic Quality Office at quality@auckland.ac.nz.
