English Language Requirements

The University of Auckland expects all students to be fluent in English to an academic level.

All applicants whose first language is not English will be required to provide satisfactory evidence of their proficiency in English. This could take the form of an IELTS or TOEFL score or, for entry to undergraduate programmes, the Foundation Certificate in English For Academic Purposes (FCertEAP).

Minimum entry requirements for proof of English language proficiency *
Test  Postgraduate (PG)
 TOEFL-paper based  575
 TWE  4.5
 TOEFL-internet based  90
 Writing  21
 IELTS (Academic)**  6.5

* Please note that higher scores may be required for some programmes

** With no band score less than 6.0.

Language requirement waiver for postgraduate applications

Postgraduate applicants who present an IELTS overall score which is half a band lower than the required score may enrol in a 12-week EAP programme at the English Language Academy, and upon successful completion of the programme will be deemed to have met the University’s English language requirement.

Applicants who have not sat an IELTS/TOEFL examination or present an IELTS score which is greater than half a band lower that the required IELTS score (or the equivalent TOEFL score) may enrol in a 20 week FCertEAP programme. Again, successful completion of the programme will meet the University’s English language requirement. Please note that enrolment in the ELA programmes is at the applicant’s own expense. Successful completion of the FCertEAP will be assessed in accordance with criteria approved by the Education Committee in December 2005. Students who gain a B- grade are deemed to have achieved an IELTS of 6.5 and students who gain an A- grade are deemed to have achieved an IELTS equivalency of 7.0. More details on the FCertEAP programme may be found at http://www.ela.auckland.ac.nz/courses/fcerteap/

From now on, postgraduate applicants who have met the University’s academic requirement but not yet the English language requirement will be issued with a conditional offer by the School of Graduate Studies granting them admission subject to meeting the English language requirement as described above.
