Workshops
To support you during the course, we run a series of research and learning workshops. These workshops will help you develop your skills and understand the expectations of University study. Most workshops run for one or two hours and include these topics:
- assessing your language skills
- life on campus
- managing your New Start studies
- reading critically
- note-taking and reviewing lectures
- using the library
- essay writing skills
- using information technology
- memory, revision and exam techniques
- planning your degree studies
Tutorials
As well as attending weekly lectures, you will be expected to attend tutorials for assessed topics during the course. These small group discussions give you the opportunity to clarify any queries you may have about lectures or assignments. Tutorials are normally held the day after the lecture. Tutorial classes will be announced in the first week of the course.
Once you enrol in New Start General, you can book into an IT and library workshop.
Assessment
During your course you will complete three assignments and sit an end of course test. These tasks will help prepare you for University studies.
To complete the course, you are required to submit all coursework and sit the test to receive a final grade.
Learning outcomes
By the end of your New Start course you will be able to:
- demonstrate the skills necessary for undergraduate study
- write essays in an appropriate academic style
- demonstrate study skills and self management
- demonstrate the ability to critically analyse and evaluate concepts
- describe and debate issues of importance within at least ten different disciplines
- make informed decisions, and plan an undergraduate course of study and enrol at The University of Auckland.
