Before you arrive in New Zealand to begin your studies at The University of Auckland, you will need to make sure you have a current passport and then apply for the correct visa or permit.

Applying from overseas
If you are applying for a student visa from overseas, you will need to pay your tuition fees first. Immigration New Zealand needs to see evidence of your receipt of tuition fee payment and Offer of Place letter. Immigration New Zealand provides specific details of all documentation required to be supplied with your application for a student visa on the application form.
You can download the student visa application form from the Immigration New Zealand website.
Applying as an exchange student
Immigration New Zealand has notified us that exchange students must obtain a student visa before entering New Zealand. Even if you are coming from a visa-waived country, they strongly advise that you do not enter New Zealand on a tourist visa with plans to apply for a student permit once here.
After you receive our letter of Offer of Place from your exchange coordinator, apply immediately for your student visa by contacting your nearest New Zealand Embassy or Consulate for procedures and an application form. You must be able to support yourself financially for the duration of your stay in New Zealand.
See full details of visa and permit requirements at the Immigration New Zealand site.
For further information for exchange students, see Prepare for arrival.
Applying within New Zealand
If, under special circumstances, you are already in New Zealand you must apply for your student visa and permit before starting your studies at The University of Auckland. This should be done as soon as possible to fulfil Immigration New Zealand requirements. You will need to make your fees payment at the Cashiers Office in the Clock Tower to obtain a receipt of tuition fee payment. Include your receipt of tuition fee payment and original Offer of Place letter with your student visa application.
You will need to either post your application or place it in the drop-box outside the Immigration New Zealand Office, at the following address:

Please bring either:
- a certified copy of your student visa from your passport or
- a copy of your student visa with your passport for Auckland International staff to verify at the start of semester. We require a photocopy of your student visa for our records.
