Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHSc)

The Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHSc) is a public health degree that prepares graduates for a broad range of health-related careers. Nearly half of all jobs in the health sector are non-clinical, and this programme focuses on those areas such as the socio-economic and behavioural factors affecting health and health provision, the role governments play in determining health policy, how health systems function, and the biological and social bases of ill-health in our communities.

- A unique non-clinical programme that provides a multidisciplinary understanding of health, healthcare and health services in New Zealand.
- Provides an understanding of the biological, social and behavioural bases of the western medical system as preparation for a career in the health sector and related industries.
- The first year of this programme provides an entry route into undergraduate clinical programmes.
- May be taken as a conjoint degree with a Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Commerce (BCom), Bachelor of Laws (LLB), or Bachelor of Nursing (BNurs).

- BHSc graduates fill a wide variety of roles in the public health sector.
- Their understanding of the social dimensions of health and health services, coupled with skills in identifying and evaluating initiatives to improve the health of populations give them excellent career opportunities in health promotion, health policy, health care management and health information services.
- A career in public health could lead to work with district health boards, non-governmental and governmental health agencies, as well as private health care providers.
