The formal name is the Joint Graduate School in Aquatic and Environmental Sciences between University of Auckland and Cawthron Institute.

Established informally about a decade ago as a Joint Graduate Centre, the partnership has contributed to the training of well over a hundred post-graduate students.

Based in Nelson, Cawthron is the largest independent research organisation in New Zealand with a strong focus on the environment and supporting the primary sector.

JR Rowland, Pro Vice-Chancellor Global & Graduate Research, and Cawthron's Chief Science Officer Cath McLeod signed the agreement at the University on May 13.

Cawthron was an outstanding example of how effective a regional research centre could be in supporting economic growth and sustainability in New Zealand's regions, Rowland said.

The partnership with the University was invaluable for providing research students with an opportunity to work in such an organisation.
