The Prize was established in 2021 and is funded by Associate Professor Hong-Key Yoon, an academic staff member in the School of Environment from 1976 to 2021, to commemorate his mother, who was born in the village of Solbo in 1910.

The main purpose of the Prize is to reward and recognise excellence in GEOG 101 Earth Surface Processes and Landforms and GEOG 102 Geography of the Human Environment.
