Restore native forest in the eastern Christchurch red zone

Help Avon-Ōtākaro Forest Park transform the Avon River Red Zone into a vibrant, city-to-sea indigenous forest park along the Avon-Ōtākaro River.

Volunteering Canterbury aims to see people and communities prospering through volunteering, by matching willing volunteers with local not-for-profit community groups. Support from volunteers enables these groups to carry out their crucial work in the community. Whether you want to volunteer as an individual or within a group, they can connect you with the right people and help you make a difference!

One such group is Avon-Ōtākaro Forest Park, a local group passionate about native plant regeneration in Canterbury. In particular, their vision is for the creation of a forest and wetland park in the former Residential Red Zone. They hold working bees twice a month, where volunteers plant native seedlings, and mulch, release and water around existing plants to encourage native plant regeneration growth and regeneration. Join them to get some fresh air, exercise and time in nature, while making a difference to the local environment!
