Residential Excellence Awards 2023

Āwhina | Service

Individuals nominated in the Āwhina | Service category were recognised for their compassion and the valuable services they provided in Accommodation. Notable examples include serving as Residential Advisory Committee Representatives, PASS Mentors and Study Fono Mentors, such as Keenan Evans, who “…has served as an Academic Mentor for Law & Commerce at Study Fono. He consistently shows up every Monday night to provide peer support and mentorship, assisting Pasifika scholarship students in navigating their courses more easily,” stated his nominator. 

Whanaungatanga | Community

Nominations poured in for those fostering a strong sense of togetherness in Accommodation, ensuring everyone was included or those who actively participated in events. Fidella Wijaya, for instance, was acknowledged for “…her constant dedication to nurturing a strong sense of togetherness on our hall. She consistently goes above and beyond to create a warm and inclusive atmosphere.”

Another nominated resident, Hunter Pirret, was described as an “…incredible team player who is never not involved within the University Hall - Towers community. He gets involved all the time especially with representing the floor in challenges and events and putting himself outside his comfort zone on behalf of the floor.”

Tiaki Taiao | Sustainability

Many residents were nominated for their involvement in the Green Team or for promoting sustainable practices. One such resident who was nominated was Bess Gallagher due to her consistent commitment to being “…conscious about the environment, helping others understand recycling practices and considering ways buildings can support the environment.”

Matteo Strachan was nominated for being a strong Green Team Leader who “…implemented the beginnings of a composting system, established a proper recycling and garbage disposal system, created a herb and veggie garden as well as adorned the building with lovely indoor plants.”
