Development opportunities through research management societies
University Research Management and Administration (RMA) staff can access complimentary memberships to several research management societies through the University’s corporate affiliation.
Australasian Research Management Society (ARMS)
ARMS is a professional organisation dedicated to developing and supporting research management professionals across Australasia. It offers professional development opportunities, networks and hosts an annual conference as well as local NZ chapter events, which are great for networking, learning and sharing best practice in research management.

How to register with ARMS under the University's corporate membership
- Navigate to ARMS (researchmanagement.org.au).
- Click the "Member Login" button in the top right-hand corner of the page and choose "Create new account".
- Fill in all the required personal details and click submit.
- You'll receive an email with a temporary password. Click the link in the email to sign in using your temporary password.
- Under "My portal", you will see an option to choose "Type of membership". Click the button to connect to a business/corporate account.
- Search for University of Auckland in the search box and click "Request link to University of Auckland".
- To change your password under "My portal", click "Login details" to set your own password.
ARMS opportunities
- Professional Development seminars via Zoom (PD Sessions @ Zoom) are free to members. More information on each session, including registration and login details, will be sent to ARMS members at least two weeks prior to each event. Members have free access to recordings of previous sessions.
- NZ & Pacific Islands chapter events - Join this group to receive notifications about upcoming events.
- Annual ARMS Conference – Access for members is at a reduced rate.
- ARMS Skills Network – A network to facilitate mentoring, skills sharing and general networking and connection with other ARMS community members.
- Accreditation programmes – Available at three levels: Foundation, established, and advanced (reduced rate for members).
- Master classes – There are two master classes on offer: 'Costing and pricing of research' and 'Fundamentals of Project Management' (reduced rate for members).
- Special Interest Groups (SIGs) - Join a SIG and help bring together communities of practice to share experiences and debate emerging areas of RMA.
European Association of Research Managers and Administrators (EARMA)
EARMA is a professional organisation that supports research management and administration across Europe. It provides resources, networking opportunities, and professional development initiatives to enhance its members' skills and knowledge in research management.

EARMA membership
The University is a member of EARMA. If you would like to register, email Julia Mouatt; she will send you a special link to register and be automatically associated with the University of Auckland.
EARMA opportunities
EARMA runs multiple annual events and conferences we can take part in, as well as travel bursaries to support travel to these events.
EARMA also coordinates various thematic groups, projects, special interest groups, courses and mentoring that members have access to, though due to the time difference, it can be difficult to participate.
International Network of Research Management Societies (INORMS)
INORMS connects research management societies worldwide, fostering global collaboration and the sharing of best practices. It aims to advance the profession by facilitating international cooperation and professional development opportunities for its members.

INORMS membership
Through the INORMS Sister Association Reciprocal Benefit Strategy (ISARBS) members of participating associations can get access to discounted rates on certain events and products offered by other associations participating in the ISARBS. These member associations are:
INORMS opportunities
The INORMS Congress is held biennially and is usually linked to a member society's annual meeting. As ARMS is an ISARBS member, we receive discounted registration rates, and there are travel bursaries to support travel to the congress.
Working groups like the Research Impact and Stakeholder Engagement Working Group and the INORMS Research Evaluation Group provide opportunities to join international groups that support the development and sharing of resources and tools across INORMS associations.
Association of Research Managers and Administrators (ARMA) – UK
ARMA is a UK-based professional body that supports and promotes best practices in research management and administration. The University does not currently have an ARMA membership; however, ARMA has some free resources we can access:
- Projects, publications and resources – free access even for non-members, including resources such as a professional services CV template, resources around research security and ethics.
- Training and development programme – webinars and workshops at discounted prices for members across three levels (early career, mid career, leadership role).
- Annual ARMA conference – UK and global RMA colleagues connect, learn, and share through workshops, plenary sessions, exhibitions and networking opportunities.
- ARMA's Qualifications Programme: The Certificate in Research Management – certification offered at foundations and advanced levels (membership required).
