New Start

New Start provides part-time university preparation courses for adults over the age of 20 who need skills and confidence to undertake academic study.

There are two one-semester courses available in New Start, each designed to prepare students for degree-level study. In addition, all New Start students must complete the University’s Academic Integrity (ACADINT A01) course and the Diagnostic English Language Needs Assessment (DELNA) during the programme.

New Start General is a compulsory course that builds students' critical thinking, writing and communication skills for successful degree-level study, introducing a variety of subjects including business, communications, education, humanities, law, science and social sciences.

New Start General is offered in-person at the City Campus (Semester One or Semester Two) and Te Papa Ako o Tai Tonga Campus in South Auckland (Semester One). This 13-week course has a two-hour lecture and a two-hour tutorial each week, with regular assignments and tests. Consistent attendance and participation are expected.

Depending on the final grade awarded in NSGEN 47, students may apply for admission into undergraduate degrees in the faculties of Arts and Education and Law. The course also forms part of the requirements for entry into degrees in Commerce, Property, Design, Urban Planning or Science (excluding the health majors).

This course introduces core concepts in mathematics and statistics applied to a wide variety of topics of everyday interest to build understanding and skills.

NSMAT 14 is offered in-person at the City Campus (Semester One or Semester Two). This 12-week course has a two-hour class each week, with regular assignments and tests.

Depending on the final grades awarded in both NSMAT 14 and NSGEN 47, students may apply for admission into undergraduate degrees in Commerce, Property, Design, Urban Planning or Science (excluding the health majors).

To apply for New Start an applicant must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident. No previous qualifications are required.

All applicants are required to complete an in-person entry assessment of literacy and numeracy. To enter New Start, applicants should score at least 18/22 in the English assessment. In addition, applicants who wish to take NSMAT 14 must score at least 14/22 in the maths assessment.
