Help remove invasive weeds and restore bird habitat in Green Bay

Help the NZ Bird Rescue Charitable Trust (NZBR) care for the wild birds of NZ by removing invasive weeds from NZBR managed land.

NZ Bird Rescue Charitable Trust (NZBR) accepts and cares for all native and non-native birds, is actively engaged with efforts toward a Predator Free NZ, and works with over 6,000 birds per year. NZBR aim is to rehabilitate and release birds as soon as they are ready. NZ Bird Rescue treats and cares for all birds on site at their centre in Green Bay, a very beautiful area of bush going right down to Manukau Harbour.

NZBR staff are looking for volunteers to help manage pest weeds and explore the big gully on site to identify flora and fauna there and help beautify/restore the area. The Trust will hold two working bee style volunteer days on 21 and 22 June for volunteers to help with a variety of tasks on site, including those listed below. These working bees are great for people with knowledge of native flora and fauna, or those that are interested in getting out in nature, learning about NZ birds, and helping restore bird habitat.

Examples of tasks you might be involved with on either of the days include the following:

  1. Working in our ginger infestation area
  2. Working in our asparagus fern infestation area
  3. Removing big weeds on/beside our main track
  4. Working in two different areas to remove clumps of pampas
  5. Being adventurous and going down into their large gully to identify what is there and maybe do some remedial work if needed

Please bring your own snacks. Some gloves and tools are on site, but you are welcome to bring your own. For more information on other volunteering opportunities, see the NZBR website: https://birdrescue.org.nz/.

Thanks you for your interest in helping NZ birds. Please contact NZBR at volunteer@birdrescue.org.nz with any questions.
