Soundtrack to your studies - 1978
Campus sounds from the seventies.

The University of Auckland’s Orientation gigs had two of the most popular Auckland bands on the line-up - Citizen Band and Hello Sailor. The latter had made their reputation through playing shows at the Globe Hotel which was next to student accommodation, O’Rourke Hall.

Hello Sailor first reached the Top 20 in early 1978 with their breakthrough single ‘Blue Lady.’
That year, The University of Auckland also had a performance by US folk/Americana Leo Kottke, who was brought over by the Student Arts Council. Punk was on the rise with Durham Lane venue Zwines becoming the centre of the scene, though visiting Dunedin punks The Enemy (featuring Chris Knox) also played the Uni Cafe. This was also the year of the first Nambassa music festival, which was headlined by Australian group The Skyhooks and had many local favs, including Midge Marsden, Beaver, and Living Force. However the biggest gig of the year was undoubtedly David Bowie at Western Springs.

Can you spot yourself in the crowd?

The most popular international album of the year was the Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack.
