Soundtrack to Your Studies - 2002

Campus sounds from the 2000s.

One of the biggest events for students this year was the return of Mash It Up! headlined by The Black Seeds, along with Roots Foundation Sound System and DJ Riddle. Also on the line-up were drum’n’bass duo Concord Dawn who’d just released the hit that would make them dancefloor favourites across the world and a gold-selling artist at home - ‘Morning Light.’

There were also signs during the year that local hip hop was on the rise with The Deceptikonz playing at Shadows with other Dawn Raid acts R.E.S. and KAOS. The music video for ‘Stop Drop and Roll’ not only shows Savage’s talent for yelling out a chorus but also features a cameo by Scribe.

The Big Day Out that year was headlined on the main stage by Prodigy and Garbage, while meanwhile over in the Boiler Room tent the dancer’s sweat was dripping from the roof while they boogied down to Basement Jaxx.

Further down the line-up were an act who were on their way to becoming the classic rock of a new generation - The White Stripes. Their legacy has been ensured by the fact that the riff from ‘Seven Nation Army’ is now a standard tune taught by guitar teachers to their beginner students.

Meanwhile on the pop charts, the biggest single of the year wasn’t complicated to work out…
