Soundtrack to your studies - 2006

Campus sounds from the 2000s.

This was the second year in a row that Orientation brought over an act who were hugely popular at the time, but who’ve faded to a distant memory in the years. Back in 2005 it was the Electric Six (‘Danger! High Voltage) and this time around it was the Bomfunk MCs. Somehow AUSA managed to book them at the height of their fame and they packed out the St James with students. The band actually had a run of hits, but none came anywhere close to their breakthrough track ‘Freestyler.’

The video was cranked on C4, which was a surprisingly high-profile music television channel. It took over the main Channel Four slot on the TV dial, despite showing nothing but music videos in its early years. Two of 2006’s Big Day Out headliners can also attribute their success in New Zealand partly to having their videos cranked on the station - Franz Ferdinand and Kings of Leon (just to prior to going absolutely massive).

The biggest selling song of the year was ‘Crazy’ by Gnarls Barkley, but the top-selling album was by our own Fat Freddy’s Drop - Based On A True Story.
