Soundtrack to your studies - 2008

Campus sounds from the 2000s.

O-week provided a great coverage of the local music scene at the time, with a run of shows that managed to keep students interested when they weren’t watching Keg Race 5000. The OpenSouls were one of Auckland’s finest live acts at the time and the band's inception traces back to the Music School at the University of Auckland, where guitarist Jeremy Toy first met keyboardist Steph Brown (aka LIPS).

OpenSouls performed at Shadows with Recloose and DJ Tyna. Later in the week, the same spot hosted Tahuna Breaks, Atlas, and Phoenix Foundation. This was still the era when the latter had their music videos made by rising star Taika Waititi and he even starred in the one for ‘40 Years’.

The week ended with the 95bFM Summer Series in Albert Park, headlined by Scribe and Tiki Taane. Two months later, Taane would reach the top of the charts with ‘Always On My Mind.’

That year’s Big Day Out was headlined by Arcade Fire and band member Will Butler got so excited that he climbed up the side of one of the speaker stacks and thumped his drum while hanging above the audience. The band had broken in Auckland first by having their song ‘Wake Up’ on high rotation on bFM.
