Professor Richard Douglas appointed to Head of the Department of Surgery

Professor Richard Douglas has been appointed as the new Head of the Department of Surgery, located within our School of Medicine.

Richard is replacing Professor Ian Bissett in this role, who steps down at the end of this year after a very successful tenure.

Richard holds the Garnett Passe Chair in Otorhinolaryngology.  He is an outstanding ORL surgeon with Auckland District Health Board and a passionate clinician scientist with a strong interest in diseases of the nose and sinus, particularly related to immunology and the microbiome.

I can think of no better person to lead the Department of Surgery.

Professor John Fraser Dean, Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences

Professor John Fraser, Dean of the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, commends Richard on his wealth of experience as a clinical teacher.

"I can think of no better person to lead the Department of Surgery," he says.
