University of Auckland commits to revitalisation of te reo Māori

The University of Auckland recognises that the Māori language is the foundation of Māori culture and identity, and despite it being one of three official languages in Aotearoa New Zealand, it remains endangered.

As a university we have a role to play in preserving and protecting the mana of the language. To honour our commitment, we pay tribute to lost loved ones who paved the way for the Māori language to be recognised, to live and to thrive.

This year Te Taura Whiri i Te Reo Māori (Māori Language Commission) has embarked on an expedition to grow one million speakers by 2040 and the University is joining the cause by growing the language in our own whare (institution).

Led by the Office of the Pro Vice-Chancellor Māori and with expertise provided by Te Mātanga Reo, our Māori Language Advisory Committee, we have a continuously developing language plan for the ‘Revitalisation of te reo Māori.’

For the plan to prosper, three goals have been identified.

• By 2040 50% of staff will have the ability and confidence to demonstrate a basic level of competency in Māori language.
• By 2024 all existing staff will have participated in professional development for te reo Māori learning and all new staff will be offered a course.
• By 2025 all students will have the option of a Māori language course in their programme of study.

To achieve these goals, we have created the following commitment projects.

• Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei: Working with iwi to restore original place names of areas within the University.
  
• Bilingual Signage: New buildings to include bilingual signage and symbols of tikanga Māori.
• Kuputaka: A glossary of Māori language terms and translations.
• Te Kūaha App: An educational resource for University of Auckland staff, students and alumni to learn basic Māori language and protocol.
  

Additional Māori language projects.

• Kotahi Mano Pukapuka: Auckland University Press to publish 100 books in te reo Māori for children and adults.
  
• Ako Arts: Faculty of Arts incorporate te reo in lesson plans.
  
• Te Herenga Mātai Pūkaha: Faculty of Engineering panel discussion on Māori knowledge and aspirations for the Māori language.
• Ngā Tauira Māori: Mahuru Māori (immersion initiative) social media competition.
• Waipapa Taumata Rau: A series of Māori language interviews with students Mohi Allen, Nona Hohepa-Taute, Tumanako Bidios and Kahuratai Painting.

The path to achieving 1 million speakers of the Māori language by 2040 begins with a single step and we invite the University community to join us.
